Summarize Group Discussion: Speaking & Writing PTE question type

You hear a group conversation — typically three speakers plus a facilitator — and then summarise what the group as a whole concluded.

Unlike Re-tell Lecture, you are not summarising one argument. You are summarising a discussion that contains disagreement, and the recording marks each speaker clearly so you can tell them apart.

This is an integrated item: it counts towards 2 different skill scores at once, which is why its weighting in a full test is higher than a single-skill item.

Watch out

Common Summarize Group Discussion mistakes

  1. 1Summarising the most persuasive speaker rather than the group’s position.
  2. 2Reporting the disagreement without resolving what the group settled on.
  3. 3Missing a speaker entirely, which leaves a hole in the content.

Strategy

Listen for each speaker's position, not the detail. Summarise the group's overall stance plus how the speakers relate to one another.
